So, in an attempt to take better care of my hair through creating (and sticking to) a regular regimen, using protective styles, and doing more research on how to keep my hair healthy, I've created this blog. This is strictly for personal use (as motivation as well as documentation) however if anyone finds something that I write useful, feel free to comment :-)NeferNenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00100803493792798805noreply@blogger.comBlogger31125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655400782968824414.post-35211295048973428922015-07-21T15:54:00.001-04:002015-07-21T15:54:00.629-04:004 Things A Flat Iron Should Have for Healthy Natural Hair | Curly Nikki | Natural Hair Styles and Natural Hair CareI just came across this article today and I LOVE it because it emphasizes the need to read, read, read before you buy. I haven't bought a new flat iron in some years just because I don't straighten my hair very often but I will definitely keep these tips in mind when I do purchase a new flat iron.

I've been avoiding posting because quite frankly I'm the only one reading. But I really do need to be documenting my hair journey a little better so from now on I'm going to try to post at least once a month.

So this past year I've had a great journey. I've straightened me hair (a couple times), cut it, gotten Marley Twists and Senegalese Twists and even tried a Bantu knot out (which I forgot to take pics of :-(). This week I'm rocking a Marley bun (pic coming soon). Tomorrow will probably be wash day and I have no clue what I'm doing to my hair after that. I'll come up with something.

Until next time!

-Mae
NeferNenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00100803493792798805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655400782968824414.post-79164165443013745672013-06-12T13:33:00.001-04:002013-06-12T13:33:08.390-04:00The Only Three Hair Masks You'll Ever Need | Curly Nikki | Natural Hair Styles and Natural Hair CareDef going to try one of these tonight when I wash my hair. Initially, I was just gonna wear my twists down, but then I decided that I wanted something a little more sophisticated. So I hit up trusty ole YouTube. I watched a few videos and then came up with this style:

I divided the back into two sections and then roll, tuck, and pinned them up. Then I sectioned out a bang in the front and secured it out of the way. Next, I took the right section and began to two strand twist UP, catching the ends of the back roll into the twist. Then I "turned" the twist backward (to create the little knot/hump) and pinned in the middle off head. I then repeated the same thing with the other side. For the "bang", I held the hair out to the right side fairly loosely and then about halfway down the length of the hair I rolled the hair backward so that the first half was loose and the second half was taut. Then I folded the taut half behind the loose half and pinned in place, making sure to hide the ends.

(Sorry I look a hot mess. Actually, I started on Wednesday evening and did the bottom two rows. But anyway, it took me from like 11am to 6:30pm to finish. They were smaller than I originally intended to make them but I think they look very nice. I got tired and made some of them too big so I had to go back and split them in half later. I got tons of compliments at the meeting and everyone thought they looked great. And look at that shrinkage!!! Loving it! Can't wait to see how long it is when I straighten it in September. :-)

Happy tresses!

NeferNenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00100803493792798805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655400782968824414.post-17399022203150039262013-05-24T09:59:00.001-04:002013-05-30T13:15:05.846-04:006 Alternatives to EcoStyler Gel for Slicking and Defining Natural Hair

Styles and Natural Hair CareSo I'm not generally big on pools and such but it's not even June yet and it's HOT!!! I'm anticipating some much needed swim time in my near future and since Xavier loves the water I guess I will be attending the pool this summer. I loved this article because it gives great advice on things I can do to protect my hair this summer.

I had an epic fail when I true to do the faux bun hawk because I only had two packs of hair and I needed three. So I tried the bun last night and played around with it. It took a while to figure out because when I put my real hair into a bun it was a pretty good size, very hard to hide. But since my hair is uneven lengths (it's shorter in the back than the front because of how I cut it), I can't twist it or twirl it to make it smaller. *sad face* So I played around and then watched a few YouTube videos and then played around some more. I did a one pack bun, a two pack bun, and a bun with a bang (I actually used one side into the bun and the other side as the bang. I wasn't a huge fan of it though). Today I made a choice and the winner is:

The two pack bun!!!

I wanted to go for something big. These are just some tips from one of my favorite websites, www.naturallycurly.com, about how to fix heat damaged hair. I'm hoping to share these tips with my CurlFriends as well as keep them in mind to prevent heat damage to my own tresses.
So once again, it's been a few months since I last posted. But I promise I will continue to get better at this. So "What's Goin' On" lately?:

1. I've recently made my own moisturizer!! But I will make a post about that tomorrow. :-)
2. I attempted to to a Teyonnah Paris inspired hairstyle and I failed. Then I attempted a faux bun-hawk. It was a technical fail only because I only had 2 packs of Marley hair and I needed 3. So I settled on this style by IslandEssence of YouTube.
3. I have recently started doing my friend's hair and I am going to be showing some of their styles as well since they're hair length varies from super short TWA to down their back.

So I apologize for the hiatus because I'm only hurting myself for not keeping better records. But I will continue to work on it :-).

Until next time!
I tried my friend's hair style (which I have previously posted a pic of. Ill link to it later) except she did a roll tuck and I figured I'd flat twist (which is how the style is SUPPOSED to be done. My friend just can't flat twist). BAD IDEA!

I spent 3 hours and only got half my head done. My arms were killing me and when I took a pic of the back to look at it, it was all messed up! So then I spent another hour trying to think of ways to fix it. In the end, I just ended up putting it in a puff for bed. I have service tomorrow. Either ill try for a roll tuck and pin style or ill go back to my faithful ol' two strand twists. It's been close to a year since I've last updated and that is BAD! I got really busy and stressed last summer and just didn't update as much as I should have. BUT!! I will try to do better. Last year I had to cut my hair. Lots of damaged split ends and fairy knots. I also tried to color it with an at home box. My hair was like "NUH UNH!!" I barely have a few sections that are a kind of auburn color. Just random patches tho. I've been doing generally ok with protective styling but just trying to make sure I'm keeping up with a good regimen. In the process of trying a style that a friend of mine was rocking a few months ago. I tried using aloe Vera juice for he first time today. I had no idea how to mix so I did just over 1/4 a cup of aloe Vera juice and a little over 1/2 cup of water with 1 tsp of olive oil. We'll see how it feels by the end of the night. It feels very moisturizer right now. will post pics of the finished product later :-)

The length check was from last week.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
NeferNenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00100803493792798805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655400782968824414.post-47321521234263797222012-05-18T02:53:00.001-04:002012-05-18T02:53:49.378-04:00Making Hard DecisionsI'm halfway through my No Puff Challenge and I've been doing AMAZING!!! I'm using protective styles, washing my hair and trying to keep it moisturized. which brings me to two issues: 1. My hair is like straw and I don't know if I can fix it, and 2. The ends are so damaged that I don't know if I can fix it.

Using the LOC method when I washed my hair the other day really seemed to help. I had only finished the twists in the front when I won't to bed and when I got up the next day, the undone portion of hair was still very soft and moisturized (I also sleep in a satin bonnet). I figure that this is a step in the right direction for fixing problem one of my hair. Which brings me to problem 2. These raggedy, dry, brittle, single strand knot filled ends. They need to be cut. DESPERATELY!! The only problem with that is that I need to cut off at LEAST 2 inches but probably more like 4-5 just because of how uneven my hair is (at it's shortest point that's not from breakage it goes to my earlobes but at it longest point in the back, it's BSL). I feel like I want to BC again now that I know so much more about how to take care of my hair. Plus, having that short hair would feel awesome this summer. But my hubby would have a heart attack if I did that so I'll have to cut the ends, but by but. After I'm done with these twists I'll probably stretch my hair and then straighten it so that I can have my ends cut. Hopefully this will help me along my journey to healthier hair!:-)
Although I took my hairstyle from last week out on Monday evening, it wasn't until Wednesday evening that I was finally able to wash my hair.

I shampooed with V05, did a DC using Queen Helene Cholesterol under a shower cap and a knit hat (it was about 2 hours. Long enough to eat dinner and do Family Worship), then did an ACV rinse (for the first time), rinsing that out with a blast of COLD water. I then tried the LOC method, that I read about the other day and used water, olive oil, and Hawaiian Silky lotion and begin to style my hair into twists. It took me two days to finish them but it did:-)

My plan is to leave these in for at least a week, touching up as necessary and then rocking a twist out for a few days, just to bring me back to Monday Wash Day. They turned out nicely so I think it'll work.
On Tuesday evening I washed my hair and decided to put it into a few
large twists to stretch because my sister is graduating on Saturday and I
wanted to try the cute roll, tuck, and pin updo I featured the other
day. I made about 10-12 individual twists in the front and was planning
on doing chunky twists in the back, when I decided that I would try to
flat twist it and see how it turned out. So I started from my left ear
and went across my hairline. It came out nicely so I tried another one. I
figured I'd just keep going and use that to stretch it. Well, I ended
up with 5 flat twists all stopping behing my right ear. I decided that
it looked cute and I could totally turn it into a protective style so I
flat twisted straight down where all the ends were and then tucked it up
and under itself and secured with hair pins. I then added 2 cute
flowers to accessorize. I LOVE it!!! I also got a really nice compliment
when I went out today! I will probably keep this style until next
Monday (Wash Day). I wonder what I will come up with next :-)
Fortunately, I HAVE been sticking to my challenge:-).

I was gonna do the Roll, Tuck, & Pin from THIS post for the meeting tonight but my hai wasn't stretched out enough. Then I was gonna do a roll twist headband but I wet my hair too much and it poufed up huge! Finally I decided on a flat twist headband. I think it turned out nicely :-)

Until next time,
She said that it was originally flat twisted but she doesn't know how to flat twist so she did a roll, tuck, & pin instead. She did a rod set on the top but I might try twisting it. I LOVE it and can't wait to try it myself!!

It looks really good on her!

Still on my quest for cute styles and I'm doing well on my "No Puff" challenge. Gonna wash and twist my hair tonight. :-)

Happy tresses!

has been my go to style. Bad hair day? Puff it. Too tired to twist it? Puff it. Super dirty and tangled and in dire need of a wash? PUFF IT!!

While the puff is a beautiful style, that I think flatters my face, I wear it WAY too often. Like, 90% of the time. As a result, I have noticed breakage in the crown of my head as well as along my edges. I think that the pulling of my edges are worrying me the most because, when I was relaxed, I had a couple spots in the front of my hairline that just wouldn't grow in/very long and I thought it was just the way my hair grew. When I stopped getting relaxers, that hair gradually grew in, evening out my hairline. Now, my puffs are killing my edges again.

So...

I am challenging myself not to wear a puff for 2 months. I had this idea last Saturday and since I twisted my hair last Monday, I'll use the 16th as my start date. No more puffs until June 17th! After then, I will try to only wear a puff 50% of the time. My goal is to stop the breakage in the crown and edges of my hair, and I think with less manipulation into the puff I will be able to achieve that. Since I won't be able to "puff it" as usual, this will also force me to come up with other styles and REGULARLY wash and style my hair. I'm thinking of lots of twist/bantu knot outs, roll, tuck, & pin styles, and my knit cap for those really horrid days. Anyway, we'll see how this works out. I'm excited!!! :-) As always,
I washed it with V05 shampoo and then used my trusty Suave Naturals conditioner.
This is the freshly washed hair:
I sectioned my hair, spritzed with water, and applied my Shea butter/Vitamin E oil mix (need to go to the store soon and replenish my supplies. I'm all out of jojoba oil). I twisted my hair into medium sized twists but then flat twisted two twists going across my hairline. This is the finished result:

I then wore the twists under a grey knit cap for a few days, mostly just because I didn't want to take the twists out until today and also because the last couple days have been really busy so I haven't had time to really do my hair. Here is the style:

I took the twists out today. I sprayed some Curls Lavish Curls Moisturizer into my hands and ran it across my twists and then slowly unraveled and separated. I think it came out nicely!
Yes. ME!! I watched a YouTube video tutorial on how to flat twist by BlakIzBeautyful and tried it out on my hair and these are the results.
The other pic is of my hair combed and stretched MOST of the way out. May 1 I will be 2 years 8 months natural. It could be longer but I've had to cut it a few times. No more mistakes now though. I'm learning and applying the knowledge do I will achieve my hair goals. I'm looking into ways to "straighten" it WITHOUT heat to truly test my length. Last April I was at CBL (straightened) but I had to chop some off afterward (I couldn't get rid of some of the straight ends) so I'm curious as to where I am now. Plus the left side is shorter than the right so I need to even them up. We'll see how that goes!:-)
I love her length!!! And this twist out is AMAZING!! I'm going to see if I can recreate it by trying out a few of the products she uses. I also discovered that I need to make more twists so that I don't have to separate so much because I cause a lot of frizz when I separate. So, I will be twisting my hair tomorrow. I plan to take the twists out Wednesday morning. Hopefully it looks awesome :-)NeferNenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00100803493792798805noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655400782968824414.post-36014897772978144392012-04-05T02:32:00.002-04:002012-04-15T23:46:57.582-04:00Just Playing AroundAs I was getting ready for bed, I was playing around and came up with this cute updo. I just took out the hair and bobby pins from my roll and tuck (the hair was left still kinda rolled back even when it was loose) and gathered it at the back of my head, rolled it over once and then used hair combs to hold it in place. The ends of this old twist out ate on its last leg but I think it's cute. Maybe even Memorial worthy. We'll see :-)
